Don’t Wing It During Slow Season-Now is the time to prep for the slowdown
Every contractor has slow months. The difference between success and struggle is how you prepare for them.
Slow season is not the time to panic — it’s the time to plan, market, and fix what’s broken in your business.
But if you wait until things slow down to start preparing… it’s already too late.
Here’s how smart contractors prep:
- Build a cash reserve in advance
- Push pre-winter or pre-summer marketing early
- Schedule training and system upgrades
- Review expenses and cut what’s not essential
- Line up “bread and butter” maintenance work to fill gaps
One of my clients had a killer summer — and assumed winter would “take care of itself.” But when the pipeline dried up, so did the cash. He had to lay off a team member and dip into personal savings. The next year, we pre-sold winter maintenance contracts and scheduled marketing pushes in early fall. He stayed fully booked through January — and had his most profitable winter ever.
The off-season is only painful if you fail to plan for it.
